As you may have read on our front page, Sassy Family is in need of storage boxes for their Nashville swaps. We receive so many clothes that we do not have enough boxes to store them in our storage unit or to display them during our swaps. We are specifically looking for large plastic bins. We're running this drive starting today, June 3 to July 3, 2017.
Plastic bins generally cost between $6-$20 dollars. Any amount you can donate will help towards getting the storage bins. Also, if you have plastic storage bins that you don't need, that would help as well.
Please click the "Donate" button below to financially donate through our secure Pay Pal account. After your financial donation, you will receive a receipt, which you can use for tax purposes
Also, if you have extra storage bins, then email us at email@example.com or call at 615-398-9872 and let us know and we can arrange to pick it up.
8:15--All packed up and ready to go! On our way to drop off our stuff at Main St., Gallery and start the swap. Hope you guys can come. Thanks start at 10 AM.
11 AM Whew! Q
11AM--Whew! We have had so many people! We still have lots of clothes and toys! Come through...
12:55 Wrapping up! And we still have tons of people! Thanks so much Nashville!
5:40 PM--Recovering from a great swap! As usual we ended up with more clothes than ever, but that's ok, because there are plans underway to give those directly to needy families. We also received some financial donations that will help us for the next couple of months with storage. Now we are in need for more boxes to store all these clothing....Check our Facebook page at http://facebook.com/SassyFamilyInc for more details!
Happy New Years, Valentine's Day, and upcoming spring!
We here at Sassy Family took a break since October and just wanted to update you on what's been going on:
*Sarah (our Oakland swap guru) had her 3rd baby, Levi, this fall. She's adjusting to life with 3 kids under six and is planning to come back for another Oakland swap this spring.
*Colleen (our resourceful Nashville savior) has gotten married, bought a house, and settled into life with hubby and kid.
*Erica (Sassy Family's fearless and crazy leader) has been doing well with her weekly radio show, balancing family life, work life, and registering her 5 year old for kindergarten.
Sounds like we did a lot and we did! However, we haven't forgotten about SF and are planning events as we speak.
Quick update on one event that happened during our break.. our holiday fundraiser! As you may remember, we were trying to raise $250 to cover storage costs for our storage unit in Nashville. We were able to raise $150, which allowed us to have storage for January and February. We are planning to do fundraisers at our swaps this year and a large fundraiser through Indiegogo for maintenance of storage and costs for putting on swaps.
So when are our next swaps? In Nashville, March 18 at Main St. Gallery. Time TBA. In Oakland, March or April at Oakland Baha'i Center. Time and Date TBA. So start cleaning out your closets, bookshelves, and toy bins!
Super excited to be back for 2017! Hope you are too!
Sassy Family is having a short term Holiday Fundraiser. From now until December 31st, we are looking to raise $250 to pay for our storage facility in Nashville. The funds will be used from January-March. Our plan is to have a larger fundraiser starting in January to cover additional costs for swaps in Nashville and Oakland.
We have had this storage unit since July to hold all the swap items that we have received through our various swaps. We have been able to give some items to teen moms and people in need, but we still have a lot of stuff. Therefore a unit is needed.
Any amount you can donate will help. After your donation, you will receive a receipt, which you can use for tax purposes. Please click the "Donate" button to donate through our secure Pay Pal account on our Home page!
Finally took a day off from my real job and I now have time to update this website and blog. Here are some of the things I'm working on:
1. Obviously putting pic and other info on this website
2. Finally updating the email list with new Nashville addresses from the last swap.
3. Working on our fundraiser, which I was trying to start November 1st, but...well...life happened...
4. Figuring out our next Oakland swap, since the Oakland Baha'i Center is under construction
So needless to say, there will be some news coming up soon! :)
One thing I totally was not able to update y'all one was our clothes giveaway to teen moms in October. I'm a high school teacher here in Tennessee and at my school we have a few teen moms. They have a weekly support group and are in need of many items. To be honest, Sassy Family was in need of space in our storage unit, so we did a clothes giveaway.
The girls were so appreciative of the clothes that they were able to choose. Many of these girls are refugees and new immigrants, so getting around to a swap would be difficult for them. We are hoping to do another giveaway soon, along with clothing donations to needy families with children at the school for the holidays.
It's been a crazy 2 weeks getting ready for this swap, plus other work obligations. But now the day is here! Watch this blog post for live updates today!
we're open and it's a beautiful day here in Nashville! Check things out and if you know anyone who needs preemie clothes let them know!
whew! What a busy crazy swap! We had so many people who braved through football traffic to come and participate. I personally want to thank Colleen Baggett (pictured above) for all her help in advertising, sorting, and so much more, especially two weeks before her wedding!
look out for pics tomorrow!
It's been a busy August for everyone involved in Sassy Family. At the end of the month we had our swap in Oakland at the Oakland Baha'i Center and it's going to be our last one (for a while) with Sarah Scarborough. She's expecting baby #3 in October and is preparing for a huge change in her family. Since she loves doing these swaps, she was super excited to do this last one and have a lot of familiar faces come. There were also a lot of new faces, since the event was picked up by an African-American mom's group in the area. Thanks so much to Sarah for her work, along with Rana Chang and Siu Akiula, our connections with the Oakland Baha'i Center. Plans are in the works to host our next swap in November, with new board member Ingrid as the host. Look for details soon!
In Nashville, myself, Colleen (our fabulous parent volunteer), and board member Barbara are getting ready for our next swap on October 23. It's a Sunday this time because the venue that has been donated to us, Main Street Gallery, is in the height of art show season and Sundays were their only available date. Hopefully the event will be a big as the last one with 65 people who attended. Looking forward to seeing everyone at that event.
In Nashville, we are also planning to do small clothing giveaways to needy moms. Partially out of necessity (our storage unit is FULL) and of course to help the community, Sassy Family will be doing giveaways to teen moms through some of the public schools in the area. More info on that will be on the website.
The final thing that I am working on for Sassy Family is our fundraiser. Sassy Family will be doing a GoFund Me fundraiser for one month, September 15-October 15. Funds are needed to continue these events and will be used for advertising, supplies, and storage maintenance in Nashville and Oakland. Look for the link on our website and our Facebook page, but if you'd like to still donate before the GoFund me drive, click on the donate link on our front page!
Thanks for continuing the work of Sassy Family.
I'm in Nashville having text conversations with friends in Oakland who are coming to the swap today. That reconnection is doing my heart good and I think that vibe will be at the swap today!
so let's see if we can get some big numbers to come today! 2 hours away :) 10-1pm. Oakland Baha'i Center. Come and see Sarah and we'll keep you updated!
10:38 AM--we're all setup ready to go! Come through!
Amazing. Just amazing.
I personally want to thank those who came to our latest Nashville swap. As you may have heard (or read), we had our largest attendance ever in Nashville with 60 attendees. Many people came in not knowing what to expect with the swap concept. Admittedly, swaps are really a hipster thing. They started in cities like NYC, Chicago, and SF and have spread throughout the country. I'm glad that so many were able to show how it worked and how it can benefit a whole community in different ways.
Unfortunately, I couldn't be there for the event. I had a major family medical emergency out of town, so my husband (and Sassy Family board member) Jason had to run the show. With the help of an invaluable volunteer, Colleen, the event ended up being a smash, impressing everyone, including the owner of the donated Main Street Gallery.
We had families from all over the Nashville area, including families that had been struggling to clothe their children. It's our mission and purpose to help all families, especially struggling families, and to be able to do that is awesome.
I have to give a special shout out to our volunteer, Colleen. She not only helped us at the event, but she worked hard on publicizing the event to the greater Nashville community. The biggest reason we had the attendance that we did was because of her efforts. You'll be hearing more about her here at Sassy Family very soon!
On another subject, below is all the donations given just to this swap. It was so much, we had to rent a storage facility to store it all. We have plans for all these items in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
Tomorrow is the day! This picture is all the donations that we could fit in our boxes. There's more. Way more. Way, way more.
Our next swap in Nashville has a lot of excitement with it. Lots of people are emailing and calling with interest in this swap. Hopefully, we'll be doing live updates, if we're not too busy. Look at this blog for more info.
